It is a 6 kms long beach from one end to another with soft sand. The main beach in the center is the most popular. It has got many street food stalls and water sports activities. Juhu is popular for lively Juhu Chowpatty Beach, a long stretch where casual cricket matches are played, and beach vendors offer snacks like bhel puri and ice cream. Nearby, chic bars serve everything from local beer to cocktails, while the white marble ISKCON temple serves up vegetarian fare and baked goods. Contemporary and experimental plays take the stage at Prithvi Theatre.
Short History
Juhu Beach, originally a quiet area with fishing villages and coconut groves, transformed as the Portuguese called it ‘Juvem’, later becoming a popular retreat for Mumbai’s elite (Jamsetji Tata built a bungalow there in the 1890s) and eventually a bustling public space known for its vibrant street food, entertainment, and as a backdrop for Bollywood films, evolving from serene shores to an iconic, lively city landmark.
Early History & Development:
Portuguese Era: The Portuguese called it ‘Juvem’, inhabited by Koli fisherfolk and cultivators.
Late 19th Century: Industrialist Jamsetji Tata bought land, planning large developments, attracting the wealthy to the area.
Early 20th Century: Juhu developed as a fashionable getaway, with villas and bungalows for the affluent.
Transformation into an Iconic Spot:
Mid-20th Century : Became a beloved public spot for Mumbaikars seeking fresh air, known for its expansive sand and palm trees.
Late 20th Century : Became famous for its lively atmosphere, particularly in the evenings, featuring street food stalls (Bhel Puri, Pav Bhaji) and horse rides.
Bollywood Connection : Its scenic beauty made it a popular filming location for many Hindi movies, including Slumdog Millionaire, Chennai Express, and Ra.One.
Modern Day:
Continues to be one of Mumbai’s most famous beaches, drawing tourists and locals alike for its sunsets, food, and connection to Bollywood stars (many live nearby).
