Prithvi Theatre

About Prithvi Theatre

Prithvi Theatre is an intimate; non-profit performing arts venue located in the Juhu neighbourhood of Mumbai. Built in 1978 by actor Shashi Kapoor and his wife Jennifer, it was established in memory of Prithviraj Kapoor to promote Hindi theatre. The venue is known for its diverse schedule of plays, festivals, and workshops, and has a lively, open-air cafe on its premises

A family legacy: The theatre is a continuation of Prithviraj Kapoor’s travelling repertory company, “Prithvi Theatres,” which he founded in 1944. After Prithviraj’s death, his son Shashi and daughter-in-law Jennifer built the permanent theatre to fulfill his dream of having a home for his company.

Run by the family: After Jennifer Kapoor’s death, their son Kunal Kapoor took over the daily operations, later assisted by his sister Sanjna Kapoor, who introduced many workshops and activities.

Significant moments: In 1995, the Indian government issued a commemorative stamp to mark 50 years of “Prithvi Theatre”.
